Blockley in Gloucestershire is the home of the Northcot Master Brickmakers.

We have been quarrying clay and making bricks here for nearly 100 years. Our richly-coloured bricks are made by Master Brickmakers who between them have hundreds of years of experience in the highly skilled art of brick-making. The bricks they make are used in all types of building projects all over the country.

Northcot is one of the very few brickworks that still takes clay from the same quarry used over the centuries. That clay is thousands of years old. When fired in our traditional coal-fired kilns it produces an intense base colour and results in an exciting range of naturally-coloured quality bricks with an enduring finish.

In addition to a broad variety of handsome genuine handmade bricks, Northcot makes elegant wirecut facing bricks and wonderfully textured reclaim bricks. We also craft a wide range of matching Specials including bonding, bullnose, angle, cant, and Victorian old type bricks, brick slips, copings and cappings.

Whilst Northcot is steeped in the rich traditions of brickmaking, it is also a modern family-owned company, using the latest technologies and production techniques. Northcot observes the latest environmental standards and has been awarded ISO 14001 certification.

Northcot bricks are at the heart of an increasing number of architecturally-led projects. Ideally placed to support modern design concepts as well as more traditional builds, Northcot Brick offers a large premium range in smooth, sand-faced and rustic textures, along with the flexibility and experience to work closely with architectural clients to offer a number of new buildwork solutions.

HERITAGE & CONSERVATION

Northcot Brick has spent many years developing a range of traditional bricks, harnessing a coal-fired kiln process to produce delicate and subtle shades and effects across a range of sand-faced, semi-smooth and rustic textures. Weathering and 'antique' techniques are also available, along with the ability to create bespoke blends and special shapes to perfectly match existing brickwork on renovations and extensions to sensitive heritage and conservation projects.

SUPPORT

From traditionally coal-fired machine-made bricks to genuine hand-thrown bricks, Northcot offers a wide selection of bricks to make every self-build home truly individual. We also aim to work closely with self-builders. Free sample panels are available to help choose the right brick type or to show local planners, while technical advice on any aspect of brickwork related to a new build is also available.

HANDMADE

We at Northcot are passionate about our skill and craftsmanship. Our genuine handmade bricks are produced by our Master Brickmakers using techniques perfected over the centuries. Our bricks lend warmth and individuality to a building. Warmth in terms of colour, comfort, and sustainability. Individuality in terms of colour, shapes and sizes.

COTSWOLD

A unique rugged texture, with distressed arrises and a variety of finishes. They provide an individual brick combination that quite literally cannot be matched. The Cotswold Collection is blended by hand to provide a consistent mix of bricks within each pack. A bespoke blend to match an existing project, or for new build requirements, is also available.

TRADITIONAL

The bricks in the traditional range are renowned for their unique charm and character. Available in either sand-faced, semi-smooth or rustic textures, the range has evolved over many years and continues to develop. A large number of merchant stockists ensure availability of the range throughout the country.

As one of the few remaining independent brick manufacturers, Northcot Brick harnesses materials from its own quarry and utilises traditional coal-fired kiln techniques to create a unique range of machined and hand-thrown bricks. From modernist projects through to sensitive heritage refurbishments, Northcot has a brick to suit.

RECLAIM

Reclaim bricks are ideal for matching with older buildings, renovations or creating an instant mature look in a modern structure. Each range can be supplied as plain colours or with blacks and/or whites included. 65mm and 73mm sizes are available, either in full loads from the works or locally from a network of stockists.

SPECIAL SHAPES

You may not be aware of the full range of Special-Shaped bricks that are available from Northcot. Bricks of special shapes and sizes are necessary to provide for changes in surface alignment, to top a wall or just for decoration. We have more than 80 different Special-Shaped brick designs in our range.

BESPOKE

All Northcot bricks are hand sorted and then hand blended to exacting quality standards. As such we have the in-house expertise and flexibility to blend more than one brick type for closely matching to existing brickwork, or to create a uniquely individual blend.

HOW OUR BRICKS ARE MADE

Northcot is one of the few brickyards to combine traditional coal-fired techniques with handmade brickmaking skills. Click the step-by-step gallery to find out more.

STEP ONE: The story begins in Wellacre Quarry, which sits adjacent to Northcot and has provided the main ingredient for our bricks for over 100 years.

STEP TWO: Centuries old, the quarry contains outstanding Jurassic lower Lias clay, which was laid down around 195 million years ago.

STEP THREE: Once the brickyard machinery has broken down the raw materials, the clay is then kneaded, ready for molding.

STEP FOUR: For wirecut bricks, the clay is extruded, treated according to brick type and then cut to size. A robot then places them onto pallets for drying.

STEP FIVE: Clay for handmade bricks goes through a different, more labour-intensive process. Here bespoke forms are used to cast every individual brick.

STEP SIX: Northcot's handmade bricks are worked by a team of Master Brickmakers, whose expertise builds on traditional techniques perfected over the centuries.

STEP SEVEN: Once formed into the desired imperial or metric dimensions, the raw bricks then undergo a careful air-drying process.

STEP EIGHT: Bricks are placed in the kiln and the door is sealed. The bricks are fired using a coal-fired process, which contributes to our bricks' unique character.

STEP NINE: The finished bricks are then carefully checked and packed by hand. Some brick types also benefit from further weathering and ageing techniques.

STEP TEN: Once packaged, the bricks are stored here at our yard in Blockley, ready for distribution to sites and builders' merchants across the country.

STEP ELEVEN: Finally, every new handmade and machine made brick type is also placed on display at our very own showroom wall here at Northcot Brick.

BRICK MATCHING

A considerable reduction in the number of brickworks has made it increasingly difficult to match existing brickwork. At Northcot we utilise a bespoke weathering facility that substantially increases the potential of a closer colour match for the discerning client. Just send an email to sales@northcotbrick.co.uk attaching digital photographs of the brickwork to be matched together with details of sizes, quantity required and your address and we will send appropriate samples to you.
