Brickactivity News January 2021

JAN 21

THE NEWT, CASTLE CARY
Hadspen House is a Grade II listed building nestled in the tranquillity of gardens, lakes and woodland in Hadspen, Somerset.

This attractive Georgian villa was built in 1687 out of honey coloured stone and many alterations and extensions have been made over the centuries.

South African Businessman Koos Bekker and his wife, interior designer Karen Roos have recently transformed the property into a stunning Boutique-style hotel re-naming it The Newt; the site harbours at least 3,000 of the amphibians.

We supplied over 100,000 of our Brickfield Antique Handmade. A few were used internally as features but most were used externally for walls within the beautiful gardens.

The Newt was very recently featured in BBC programme Remarkable Places to Eat with Fred Sirieix.

ANOTHER AWARD WON!

We were delighted to win our fourth Build It Award recently for Best Brick Home. Northcot House in Pirton featured in the Autumn Brickactivity wowed judges with the architectural design and bespoke blend of bricks.

MAINTENANCE AT NORTHCOT OVER CHRISTMAS

A lot of essential maintenance work was carried out over the Christmas break. UK Leading Specialists, Rafferty Steeplejacks who installed our newest chimney almost 6 years ago, service the chimney annually. This year, their team of experts have replaced the cone on top of the chimney and given it a lick of paint! They also re-pointed any movement cracks in our original brick chimney. Also carried out was a full extruder refurbishment. After every 25 million bricks made, the machine made extruder is stripped right back and refurbished. It’s now back in action and ready for the next 25 million.

SHREWSBURY FLAXMILL MALTINGS NEARING COMPLETION

The world’s first iron-framed building, Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings was built in 1797. It was first used as a flax mill, then a maltings and also a training centre and barracks during the Second World War. Derelict for many years, restoration of this iconic piece of the industrial revolution is almost complete. The buildings will provide a mixed use development with community, residential and commercial facilities. Working with Historic England and Croft Building and Restoration, we have supplied around 60,000 bespoke bricks and specials to the project.
